A swimming pool naturally loses water through evaporation, splash-out, backwashing, and normal use. But when the water level drops faster than expected, it may be time to ask a more serious question: is my pool leaking*
One of the easiest warning signs is a water level that keeps falling even when the pool is not being used. In hot, windy weather, some evaporation is normal, but a pool that loses more than about 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch per day may need closer attention. If you are adding water several times a week just to keep the pool operating properly, that is a strong sign that something may be wrong.
Another common clue is air in the pump system. If you notice bubbles coming from the return jets, a pump that struggles to prime, or water pressure that changes unexpectedly, the issue could be related to a leak in the plumbing or suction side of the system. Wet spots around the pool equipment, soft soil, unusually green grass, or sinking areas near the deck can also point to underground water loss.
Cracks in the pool shell, loose tiles, gaps around fittings, and separation around skimmers, lights, drains, or return lines are also worth inspecting. Even a small opening can allow a surprising amount of water to escape over time. Vinyl liner pools may show wrinkles, floating liner areas, or visible tears. Gunite, plaster, fiberglass, and concrete pools may show cracks, staining, or hollow-sounding areas.
A simple way to check for water loss is the bucket test. Place a bucket on a pool step, fill it with pool water to match the pool’s water level, and mark both levels. After 24 hours, compare the drop inside the bucket to the drop in the pool. If the pool loses noticeably more water than the bucket, you may have a leak rather than simple evaporation.
